Brownsville

HISTORIC MAPS ARCHIVE

When reading about the history of the Three Towns, places are occasionally mentioned that make one wish to consult a map from those days.  Unfortunately, this has proven to be a tall order, as there has been no centralized collection of the historic maps depicting the Three Towns area over the past several centuries.

Until now.

The Brownsville HISTORIC MAPS ARCHIVE is designed to meet that need.

The Brownsville HISTORIC MAPS ARCHIVE is a collection of historic maps of the Brownsville, Bridgeport/South Brownsville and West Brownsville area, with the earliest map of Brownsville going back to 1819, just five years after the founding of the boroughs of Brownsville and Bridgeport.

The maps in this historic maps archive have been digitized for presentation here on the BrownsvilleHistoryHQ.com web site.

* Some of the map images here are professionally processed photographs of physical maps that are in the collection of the Brownsville Free Public Library.

* Some are photographs of physical maps in the collection of Glenn Tunney.

* Some are sets of Sanborn Fire Insurance maps (there are 7 sets of maps from 1886 to 1924), with links provided here to the on-line Sanborn maps collections at the Penn State digital library web site and the web site of the U. S. Library of Congress.

Credit for the professional digitization of the paper map collection of the Brownsville Free Public Library goes to Kelly Tunney, Brownsville photographer.
