1809-1820 Brownsville and Bridgeport boroughs

This severely faded undated map depicts Brownsville and Bridgeport boroughs sometime betweeen 1809 and 1820.  In 1809 or 1810, a unique chain-supported bridge, designed by Judge Finley, was built over Dunlap Creek, replacing one that had been washed away in a flash flood.  That chain bridge, which is shown on this map, collapsed in March 1820 under the weight of snow and a heavy wagon and team of horses.  Therefore, we conclude that this map depicts the two boroughs during the time the chain bridge was in place.
