1832 Fayette county

   This 1832 map of Fayette county, according to the notation on the map, was engraved by S. M. Lewis from actual surveys by F. Lewis, who it is assumed to refer to Freeman Lewis.  

   According to John Perry, writing for Hymnary.org, Freeman Lewis was the county surveyor of Fayette county from 1823 to 1836.  Mr. Lewis had 11 children and was, in addition to being a surveyor, a writer and traveling school teacher.  He also played the organ and wrote music. publishing a book of camp meeting hymns and sacred music, including some of his own compositions.  He served as organist for the Presbyterian church in Uniontown. 

   Freeman Lewis is also credited with assisting in the surveying and locating of a route for the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.
